how is weathertex made

The hardwood use to produce the Weathertex range of products is sourced from local sawmill tailings, thinnings and managed forests. No old growth hardwood is used, helping to ensure that the product is enironmentally sound.

The hardwood is broken down to its constituent fibres using a high pressure steam mason gun (of which there is only three in the world today). The resulting hardwood fibre and water is transported to the presses allowing the naturally occuring sugars and starches to be removed - making the final product very unattractive to termites.

The fibre is pressed under great pressure and high temperature to produce boards which are held together using the activated natural lignins in the timber, which is the non-toxic 'glue' that holds the fibres together.

This unique process results in a product that is very dense, has no artificial additives, and is of a randon fibre pattern which eliminates delimination and promotes moisture resistance. It is the dense random structure that allows the product to be used in external as well as internal applications.

The board have not grain, knots or gum veins which are what can cause splitting in natural timber weatherboards. Fixings can be placed very close to the edges of the board without the risk the need to pre-drill.

The finished product is given an undercoat to help with moisture gain and also results in less painting being required onsite.

The Primelock product is able to be 'secret nailed' and has concealed joins which result in very smooth lines and less surface preparation for painting.

Because the product is very stable paint is less likely to be affected by spliting and movement of the timber over time, which means less repainting.
